10 MAY - 7 JUN, 2025
Stepdown is delighted to present a new suite of video works by Heretaunga Hastings-based artist Ana Iti.
He wāhi pāoro brings together two video works by Ana Iti, I am a salt lake (2024) and A dry and windswept body (2025). Both take the salt lakes at Kāpara-Te-Hau (Lake Grassmere) in Marlborough as a starting point to think about how we might relate and learn from the processes and cycles harnessed in the production of salt.
I am a salt lake combines slides of text, footage filmed at Kāpara-Te-Hau and the artist’s home here in Heretaunga Hastings. A dry and windswept body includes drone footage captured during the salt harvest, accompanied by an audio track that experiments with the textures and rhythms of breath and salt.
A limited edition single-sided 7” lathe of the audio from A dry and windswept body will be released on the occasion of this exhibition.
Opening Celebration: 4pm Sat. 10 May
Ana Iti (Te Rarawa, Pākehā) is an artist currently based in Te Matau-a-Maui Hawke's Bay. She works across sculpture, video, and text. Iti’s work explores poetic and structural relationships between sculpture, language and our environment, as well as the practices of shared and personal history-making.
Iti has a BFA (Sculpture) from the Ilam School of Fine Arts and a MFA from Toi Rauwharangi Massey University. In 2024 she was the recipient of the New Zealand’s Premiere contemporary Art award, the Walters Prize.
