JUL 6 - AUG 3, 2024
Stepdown is buzzed to present our next exhibition with Te Matau-a-Māui Hawke’s Bay artist Bernie Winkels, titled ‘On’.
Through the use of wood and ceramic creations, Bernie will present a number eight wired suite of switches, sockets, circuit boards and miniature city-like environments - fusing off the grid whimsy and circuit-bent wonkiness, these take on the access and inner workings of power structures and platforms.
‘The lumpen, miniature city-like environments were derived from the idea of the ‘15 minute city,’ an urban planning concept where neighbourhoods provide residents with the convenience and accessibility of everyday basic needs, all within a 15-minute radius by foot or bike.
By sculpting and thereby freezing that moment in time, Bernie has created a connectedness of miniature cities ranging from colourful to colourless, expressing futuristic cityscapes reminiscent of dystopias or desiccated remains.
Opening Celebration: 4-6pm, SAT 6 JUL
