JO BURZYNSKA
Osmic Resonance
Osmic Resonance
THU SEP 19 - SAT 5 OCT, 2024
Stepdown is delighted to present our exhibition with Ōhinehou Lyttelton multi-sensory artist Jo Burzynska, titled Osmic Resonance.
Through a series of audio-olfactory works, Osmic Resonance connects fundamental and cultural vibrations between the senses of smell and hearing.
Challenging the traditional Western notion of the divided sensorium, the works tune into three areas on a spectrum that resonate across multiple senses and cultures. Osmic Resonance draws on crossmodal conceptualisations of the spatial elevation of sound and perfume, with their top, middle and base/bass notes.
The exhibition also includes a wearable element, The Frequency Range series of perfumes, which will be available to purchase at the gallery.
Opening Celebration & Artist Talk: 5-7pm, THU 19 JUL
Dr Jo Burzynska is a multimedia artist, researcher, writer and perfumier. Initially pursuing parallel careers in sound art and wine writing, over time her practice has become increasingly multisensory, making work that regularly combines sound with taste, touch, and the scents she often distils herself. Burzynska is engaged with research into sensory interactions and their creative application, developing a practice she calls crossmodal art. Informed by the fields of art, psychology, sensory science and anthropology, this was the focus of her doctoral research, and the subject of the book she is currently writing for Routledge. She is based in Ōhinehou Lyttelton.
